Industrial binoculars, or how poor our English is…
Once upon a time I was doing a group paper for some course at NHH. We were 2 Norwegian guys, 1 Norwegian girls, 1 guy from Tanzania and myself. After a series of discussions we split the paper and each of us got a part to draft. Our contributor from Tanzania got, among the rest, introduction. Some days later we read the tentative intro. We all got struck by the high and pathetic vocabulary the guys used and the passage on “industrial binoculars” became legendary after all. I remember myself protesting against degrading the language of the intro just because our parts were written with a way more mundane language. But the industrial binoculars were withdrawn.
Now here in India I go high whenever I read newspapers or any sort of formal messages. They all are of "industrial binoculars" type. This is interesting what Indians have made to Englishi n general. And sophistication of the vocabulary along with pathetic undertones are amazing in particular. Wonder about the reasons behind those linguistic matters.
Check this out:
a message from AIESEC that I got the other day.
“Bla-bla-bla are proud to bring you the most awaited conference of the year...
an exciting, exhilarating, enthralling experience...
The conference which will see the birth of the New Leadership of AIESEC in India...
Leadership that will Lead the Renaissance...!”
